5 Worst Networking Habits to Kick to the Curb
Feb 21, 2024If you’re looking to improve your networking skills, there are some common mistakes you should avoid. From not having an elevator pitch to not following up after meeting someone, here’s a list of networking mistakes to avoid.
- Stop waiting for someone else to start a conversation (virtual or in person)
When it comes to networking, the worst thing you can do is sit back and hope that people will come to you.
You need to be proactive and reach out to people whom you think could be great connections. Don’t be afraid to send a cold LinkedIn Message or walk over and introduce yourself.
2. Stop being salesy - Stop only talking about yourself and your strengths
This might seem counterintuitive - "Cecylia, am I not networking to ‘sell’ myself?"
NO - stop it at once.
Networking is only powerful when you are building relationships with like-minded people. No one wants to be stuck just listening (or reading) about how great you are.
So focus on getting curious, building relationships and trust.
3. Don’t neglect your online presence.
In today’s world, your online presence is just as important as your in-person presence.
At most in-person networking events - people are not exchanging business cards - they’re connecting on LinkedIn.
Make sure your LinkedIn profile is up-to-date and that you’re active on social media.
4. Don’t forget to follow up.
The follow-up is where true networking happens.
After meeting someone new, send them a LinkedIn Message or email. Refer to something you found interesting to them or share a resource that could be useful to them.
This will help keep you top of mind and shows that you’re interested in continuing the relationship.
5. Don’t ask for help.
Ask for information instead.
If you’ve just met someone and you’re already asking for a favour, then there’s a good chance you’ve alienated them.
No, this person cannot review your resume or set up a meeting with their boss. They might, however, be willing to give you a couple of pointers or a good resource.
